Does saving move or copy/delete ?

Well, the whole question is in the topic.
Maybe it is too obvious that saving moves the file from the databasefolder to the saving location, but when I watch the speed and the interference with other harddisk activities, I get the impression that the saving process goes faster, if the databasefolder is on an other physical harddrive, than if they are on the same partition.
I would expect that saving (in case of moving on the same partition) would go faster, while copy/deleting on the same partiton would go slower.
Hence my question
