filter question

filter question:

If I want to exclude subjects containing Dick van Dyke (for example), how do I state this in a filter without losing Dick, or Van, or Dyke individually? Is it done with quotes? or how.
If this is documented or explained in another post, please point me to that. (html pointer)

edit: also, how would arguments with special characters be stated? (like pitch.black)

subject contains 'Dick van Dyke' ban. no quotes single or double, just the expression in the edit box.

or you can use any wildmat:

http://www.netwu.com/newspro/wildmat.htm

or boolean wildmat - wildmats optionally in parentheses, | means OR, & - AND and ^ - NO

http://www.netwu.com/newspro/filters.htm

http://www.netwu.com/newspro/history.htm look for v2.2

Thanks...
The link "http://www.netwu.com/newspro/wildmat.htm" has links, none of which works, so it is relatively meaningless. Could you check that for me, please?

The second link "http://www.netwu.com/newspro/filters.htm" is EXCELLENT and was very helpful!!! I presume wildmat would be *dick*&*van*&*dyke* and for the other one would be just *pitch*&*black* That's easy and the examples there are great! Thanks!

The third link "http://www.netwu.com/newspro/history.htm look for v2.2" also has the bad link (smluc changed their site, I guess!), but the info there is helpful - especially the link to your "search on servers" info! , <- a new toy, definitely!

Thanks!

the wildmat page is self-contained and complete, i just took it from some site a long time ago, the links are to unrelated unix commands and the links in the bottom are to the document itself.

Oh, hey Alex, I did have a soft question on the Server search thing - I created a folder and created a #group in it, and removed the verizon server from it so there's only one server attached to it, and did every search I could think of but couldn't get any results. Since I know there's still some Dick Van Dyke stuff in alt.binaries.vcd, I searched for dick in that group but nothing - both group and server in that special folder still say (empty). Wonder what I'm doing wrong. I know it takes a long time, but - nothing! This is not a pressing issue but more of a futures thing and would be very nice to know about. If you have any thoughts...
Thanks!!!

check task manager, headers the following errors pane for errors.

if there are no errors try simple patterns first.

also servers don't understand boolean wildmats, for search groups you can only enter wildmats separated by '|', newspro just sends every wildmat separatedly.

- dunno...
:?
works fine now!
(it's still doing a search for monkees on a.b.vcd)(someone posted a ton of them!)

And the only thing different I did was to completely destroy my XP opsys and regen it from scratch... (that was last night shot to hell!) :x :x :x

And I figured with nothing in the registry I would have probs getting NP going but it started right off and picked up from where it was in downloading stuff. NEAT!!!!! :D :D :D (it's in a different partition)

Yay!!!
