hdr.dat size

I try to make the fixed size of the hdr.dat size say 900 or 1000 megabytes. However it will only remember 800. Why is this? Is there a limit to how bit the hdr.dat file can get?
I have 2gigs of ram and my swap is set 4096. My peak memory usage is around 800 meg and my cpu usage is nill.

Any ideas would be welcome. I have perused several websites trying to get some understanding but have found not much.

i'm working on increasing the hdr.dat size (but it will be arranged rather in a different way) to 1.4GB, when going further the system doesn't want to allocate more memory within a single process. all is connected to win32 limitations of the address space so such changes are very difficult, in the end dealing with hardware limitations.

Thanks, every little bit will help. Every year, more and more seems to get posted and news providers keep increasing retention. A couple years ago I never thought I'd see news providers retain 30 days binaries on NNTP.
