Is there any way to put a filter on a newsgroup (or newsgroup folder) so that when I open the newsgroup into the right hand message pane only the new messages are shown initially? I know that I can open the newsgroup and then filter the messages with "messages are new" but I ALWAYS want this behavior.

I want to have all mesages available, so that if I reset the message filter I get all messages.

You have to make an iniitial filter, by using the filter editor. Make one that applies to all, messages are new, and extract. Save that filter with a name and then right click the newsgroup and select initial filter. Find the filter you saved and open it. From then on, the initial filter will be applied whenever you open the group.
