When I try to use xpat search group with many newsgroups all my servers get detached with error "411 No such newsgroup",
only those that don't support XPAT or don't work are left and I know some of the servers don't have some of the newsgroups, I have to reattach many times to find something.

Bug or me doing something stupid?
It works fine in NewsPro.

it is a known issue, just in ue 'no such group' will detach server from the search or even import group, the fix is in the to do list for the next release (several minutes to fix, just with first indexed enabled release it is so large volume i didn't go through the older ue to do list).

it affected only xpat groups (import was ok). less than 1 line of code to fix, only needed to check for the condition.
