why is it when I do a search, and add a collection, when it's added to the Import folder it expands all the files in the collection, can this be turned off, so it just adds the collection and not expand it? Did I miss a setting somewhere?

Unfortunately it's the default behavior.
I you turn off "Open import group" in "Search/Import" pane in F5/"Properties", it will not expand added collections while the import group is open.
Drawback is it will no change focus, so you'll stay on the "Search service" results, although it can be convenient
