Creating prefs on the desktop?
I have a copy of the trial version of NewsPro that I put on H:\Applications\NewsPro\ Everytime I run the program I get a prefs folder called NewsPro that pops onto the desktop of my machine. How can I configure it to use the same folder that the application is in?
check the file properties (right mouse button, properties).
if it is indeed the executable - maybe it is corrupted (especially if you see not the newspro but the standard windows application icon), download the trial package and replace the executable.
newspro doesn't change its own executable so if it is the case the cause is something external.
the package on the site is ok, if you are able to extract newspro.exe from the zip all is in order.

Yes, The NewsReader. Maybe I am not explaing myself correctly? I have newspro installed(Unziped) in the path listed above on my H: (Maybe it is required to be on C:?) drive. I go to that folder and double click to run the program. I quickly see a quick dialog with a progress bar (something about creating databases) then a folder called NewsPro appears on my desktop with Data and Temp even though all the other application files are still in the folder on the H: drive. These files look like they are created when newspro is first run and store all the data.
It's like for some reason it can't detect the path that it's running from and ends up creating all the data on the desktop instead of the root from where I am running the program.
Everything seems ok as far as CRC's go and stuff. Everything has an icon.

newspro keeps the starting path in the registry. it also uses registry extensively during the run although in the end all is dumped into the reg.dat file.
when you run newspro in the first time it asks for directory (probably you mean this dialog - browse for folder - select directory for the newspro database).
if you see this dialog repeatedly - it means newspro is prevented from using the registry, it cannot function then from session to session.
if it is not the browse for folder dialog but the windows explorer pops up along with starting the program - I don't know what it is, try to move the newspro database directory to some other location and invoke file menu->switch database to switch to it.

Ok got it all figured out. At some point I think I did have a copy of NewsPro running from my desktop but I deleted it. Then when I had done the new copy on my H: drive it was still reading the registry keys from the previous time I had used it.
Once I went in and nuked the reg keys everything was fine and I was allowed to pick the directory again.
