My current version(3.4) will not run on W8.1Pro . Is there a way to preserve the current database
and merge it with the newer build(s) that are known to be compatible with Win8.1Pro ?

Databases are compatible through all versions, except for downgrading from v4.x to lower than v3.7, upgrading is always ok. It is described at http://www.usenetexplorer.com/download.htm

Also the database folder can be copied from one location to another, then in edit menu->properties->general there is an option to change the database location.
