the mistake is you cannot put newsserver names in the newsgroups field in the xpat dialog.

xpat is a standard command provided by newsservers, it works on per newsgroup basis, so you need provide newsgroup name (newspro also can handle several newsgroup names) and wildmat pattern (newspro allows several patterns separated with '|').

as to servers all servers you see when you expand the newsgroup name in the workspace window will be searched (you can set msg-id direct servers so they won't but this is not the default case).

Aren't you supposed to always put | (three keys the right of p) in front of what you intend to type in? example |canary ? If this is wrong please tell me? I have been putting it in both places The Wildmat and when I type in (for example) search for |canary

Did you not see Alex's response above? The mistake, which both blackdog56 and I missed, is that you are putting the server names in the box where the newsgroup names should go; as a result, NewsPro has nothing to search.

When you create an XPAT search (#<name>), all servers are automatically attached and will be used, assuming the newsgroups you specify in the dialog box are present on them.

The wildmat "|" character denotes "OR" and is used to join keywords and/or strings to broaden a search. So, for instance, if you want to search for all references to "robin" as well as "canary", you would write "robin|canary" (sans quotes). With just one keyword you don't need it.

As for the "Remarks" box, I suppose if you want to leave a reference note to yourself about the search, this is where you would do it.

hi thank you all here

Hi Last evening I was able to do an XPAT search successfully. I appreciate all of y'alls help, here. I had one last question as relates to the search. Ok I'm going to use the default example I always use so as not to confuse myself..."canary" now..

1.Now,you have done your search,
you look on ,you see everything it pulled up.

2. You see the subject,You see the date, you see the author,You see the lines

3. You want to know what newsgroup it is coming from so you can join that group.

4.Theres no listing for the group.

5. There's nothing here telling you what newsgroup the messages are coming from

6.So you pull up a message from out of the one thousand or so threads that XPAT found

7.You pull up several just to test and examine.

All the messages look like this : They all give the Date of the message,The Subject and the lines and whatever it is the poster uploaded. However, everything else is white; You see those things I just mentioned with nothing else. Nothing telling you where the newsgroup is or anything else so how can you join the group without knowing where it is? How do you re-do your XPAT search this time?. I want to tell it to look for WHICH newsgroup all of my messages are coming from?

Please help

Hi As I mentioned I am one-hundred percent sure I have successfully done an XPAT. Again,I am SO grateful. So basically I can (in a sense) graduate to "tier two" so to speak *tehehehehe* Ok I'm doing another one now. I notice when I do another one I've got to delete the first one entirely before I start another. NP So I still do not know which one of the tabs you choose (in this case: subject,from,date,lines,organisation,references,message-id) when you wish to tell XPAT to do this;

Ok XPAT I know a bloke I want to find. He always goes by the name

"RedCouch" (just an example)

1.XPAT I wish for you to do a search.
2.XPAT I wish for you to do a search on the one, sole server goliath-west.newsfeeds.com
3.XPAT I want you to look through every available newsgroup on goliath-west.newsfeeds.com
4.XPAT I want you to pull up the name within every newsgroup of every poster who goes by the name of "RedCouch"
5.Lastly XPAT, Priority number one is I want you tell me the NAME of every newsgroup in which you find "RedCouch" as a poster
This is what I need help with!!!
Now I want to go back to my all important tab windows cuz they're ALMOST right *tehehehe
1.Tab1 (little green books icon) At the top the little green books icon with the word Newsgroups next to it.
Right underneath it an open book icon with a tiny green dot on it. next to the book is the name I chose for XPAT search #rant [empty]
Underneath that goliath-west.newsfeeds.com with a tiny green light on so it reads goliath-west.newsfeeds.com [empty]
2.Tab2 The word Servers with it's appropriate icon
Under that is goliath-west.newsfeeds.com [empty] 14.26 M There is a tiny green light on the goliath part.
Underneath that is an open book icon. It has a tiny green light on. It reads #rant [empty]
3.Tab3 Here I see at the top the word Newsgroup List Next to the word Newsgroup list are these symbols <#> [8908] There is a little green light icon situated in the goliath-west.newsfeeds.com So the entire thing reads
Newsgroup List (with little green light on) <#>[8908]
goliath-west.newsfeeds.com (with little green light on) [8908]
Tab 4 The Appropriate Icon with the word Public Servers
The tiny World Icon with the words Web Sites
Thats all on tab 4

What can I do to fix the situation here?
Can anyone help me? Thank you so much, here

I am not sure I completely understand the problem you are having now. First off, you don't have to delete an XPAT to start a new one. You can create as many as you feel like each beginning with a #. To find posts from RedCouch you would use the From field.

Once again, I apoligise. I do not wish to
confuse myself or anyone else herewith

Alright Lets take Red Couch alright I did a search the other night. Heres how I typed in the search

FROM *redcouch*
I let it run for about twenty-four hours.
Upon revisiting the next day everything
appeared it had worked. And indeed in MOST aspects it had.
I now had a group (which I concocted of course) #rain and I had over 1000 headers in my new illegitimate group
Alright, well I look on here..I see red couch. I feel quite sure this is the redcouch I want but remember what I also wanted was what newsgroup was redcouch posting to? Well, there's redcouch, thread after thread, there's redcouchs messages contained in each thread. But the entire rest of the screen is snow white. No indication what newsgroup redcouch is in. And thats every thread same thing. So whats the deal here? I wanted XPAT to tell me what newsgroups redcouch was posting in? I'm certainly not going to dispute that one can carry one several XPATs at a time I do not wish to corrupt my train of thought. So I took Bruces counsel and took everything out except for Goliath-west and it's working (I say working I mean I'm 30 steps ahead) It would be foolish to "put more on my plate than I can currently handle" at the present moment. No worries, mate

If you right click on a post or hit F2 it will tell you what servers/newsgroups the post is associated with. However, I believe it only relates to what's in your local database. So if you are not subscribed to any newsgroups, it will indicate only the XPAT one. I could be wrong on this; hopefully someone will correct if I am.

I'm going to make a suggestion. This is a great program, albeit one with a bit of a learning curve. I realize that you only really want it for one purpose, doing XPATs. However, I think it would be in your best interest to subscribe to a few newsgroups, download headers, play with filters, etc. and just get the hang of how to do what, where to look for what (the right-click menus offer a huge amount of options). In short, learn the basics and then running XPATs might not be so frustrating and/or complicated.

There are help files at NewsPro's homepage; plus Mike Stammer's site:

I was just going to post that!

Here is the direct link on how to do XPAT searches:

I would suggest reading the whole document and getting up to speed with the whole program.
