Fresh install of Windoze and NewsPro - no connection

Post by jeeperv6 »

I recently upgraded my motherboard, re-formatted my drive, and have re-installed Windoze XP Corp. Edition. I re-installed Newspro and set it up using backed up settings from my previous installation. Aside from loosing my settings in Newspro(obviously I never found the file/s with all the important settings) I have got it running and set up.

Now I use Newsfeeds, and for some reason when I tell NewsPro to download new headers, it just sits there. It doesn't do anything. I managed last night to get it to download headers in one group, but I don't know what I did. Today I'm trying to get it to download and a 45 minutes later, still nothing has happened. I checked my router, yes my ports are open and assigned correctly to this computer. I've tested email, web, etc and I can send/receive fine, so it's not an internet problem. Any ideas on what I did wrong with NewsPro?

I've got NewsPro tweaked with someone's earlier suggestions on how to set up NewsPro and Newsfeeds together, but that never gave me any problems before the re-install.

Thanks for any help/suggestions you can all offer. :)

if you saved reg.dat from previous installation - just put it in the data directory to have most settings, fld.dat contains folder info.

check in the task manager whether there are running tasks (vertical bars) when you get new headers.

if you see only pending and no running tasks you messed something in newspro settings.

if you see running tasks - eventually an error should result (the error pane to the right of the headers pane in the task manager). if you have a firewall it may be it, or some router misconfiguration - search the forum for 'router' maybe you'll find something.

Alex,

Thank you for the prompt reply. I deleted my set up(via Norton Cleansweep) and downloaded a fresh copy of NewsPro, punched in my serial number and set up everything again fresh. I've tried to pull newsgroups and it doesn't do anything, NewsPro just sits there. I entered in alt.binaries.test (since I know it's a vaild newsgroup) manually and tried to pull headers in that group. Nothing. Newspro just sits there.

I can telnet into the Newsfeeds server with no problems. I've checked my router's settings, nothing has changed there. I'm not running a firewall. I've checked the taskmanager and nothing is happening. Looked in the Pending & Failed windows, nothing is listed at all.

I'm still scratching my head here and refuse to give up, cause it worked before my new motherboard.

did you enter servers?

when you expand the newsgroup you should see the servers.

keep task manager open with the 'headers' pane visible and invoke 'get new headers'

do you see the bars of running tasks?

if there is an error - the newsgroup icon in the workspace window will be with the red dot.

the 'errors' pane to the right of the 'headers' pane should contain error messages then.

is the overall picture like that?

newspro won't launch header tasks if the max. number of tasks for the server in properties->servers (or for the server subset the server belongs to) is zero or suppress headers for the server is checked or server is disabled.

Hi Alex,

Yes, servers are entered. I double checked on Newsfeeds website to make sure addresses were valid, they are.

When I expand the newsgroups to look at the server list, they are all there.

I always keep Task Manager open so I can see what's going on. But there's nothing going on. Not even a flicker of life.

I've checked the router, port 119 is open to nntp servers. In the out-going traffic part (Linksys router, by the way), it doesn't show any nntp traffic no matter, how many times I tell NewsPro to pull headers and refresh the router's output log.

However, if I telnet into a server on port 119, it does show up in the router log. For some reason, Newspro isn't liking this Windows set up, that's about the only thing I can figure out.

Check the max number of tasks total, and max number per server as well.

if nothing happens in the task manager - you changed something in settings (number of tasks to zero, server disabled, etc.)

better email me reg.dat from the newspro database 'Data' directory (invoke file menu->switch database to see the directory to support@usenetopia.com), it will be the fastest way to resolve it instead of enumerating all settings.

How to save your settings

Post by poma5 »

I have moved NewsPro to a new machine by simply copying the entire NewsPro directory on to a CD and then copying that to the new machine. Then I the just create a desktop short cut and away I go. All of my settings, filters and preferences stay intact. One note!! Before you burn NewsPro to CD you will probably need to do an "Emergency Reset Database" to flush out any partial downloads left in the database. I was able to put NewsPro on a 128meg keychain flash drive and take NewsPro with me during vacation. :D
