help: I deleted attachments folder, how to get them again?

Post by bassie »

I did an xpat search with watch/auto filter, it was looking for a post in alt.binaries.misc. I was downloading the newest attachments. Then I made a mistake: i deleted (permanently) the folder where these attachments were saved. The problem is that I am not able to get the older attachments from the newsgroup a.b.misc, I get only the new ones. I tried resetting the newsgroup, also rescan did not work. I know for sure the attachments are still on the server (they save it 6-7 days).

How to get them?

edit menu->show deleted headers, then select headers you want to undelete and invoke 'undelete headers' from the context menu.

if purging is enabled for the newsgroup - disable it first and invoke rescan headers then apply the above.

Hi Alex,

I did undelete headers. Then I indeed saw them standing there. However they did not appear in their original folder on the disk, nor somewhere else.

Then i selected them and right-clicked and then selected "save attachments" which however did not happen.

Then I selected "download and save attachments" on a few files of them. That process indeed started.

Is there a possibility to get the attachments after undelete? without again downloading?

there is a possibility to delete headers without deleting bodies but better don't turn it on, the data difectory will grow and grow accumulating everything that has been downloaded and you'll need to invoke show deleted headers and delete bodies from there.

you may also choose not to delete headers/bodies of saved attachments but just mark them read (properties->general, saving attachments) and delete them later manually.

by default when you delete headers - bodies are also deleted so you need to download them again. since it is one time occasion maybe better to leave as it is.

Hi Alex,

thank you for your quick reply.

It takes indeed too much space to keep the attachments saved. It is already a very good think that I can get the deleted headers back, so it is easier to download the attachments again.

Thanks again.
