How do you control how far back in time articles are loaded when you open a newsgroup?
Also, is there a guide that explains what the different settings mean. There are a lot of settings that don't make sense to me. For instance newsgroups there different load modes, retention/dates, headers per server. What do they mean or do?
I know all of this is intuitively obvious to you, but it is not to me.
Thanks for your time.
controlling how far back in time??
Re: controlling how far back in time??
This part was written many years ago of course.
In edit menu->properties->newsgroups you can set retention and last headers per group. E.g. if you set retention to 500 days, the oldest header will be 500 days (unless to set let all incoming headers through in properties->general) and the rest will be dealt with according to "edit menu->properties->general, retention" and "purge deleted headers automatically" below it.
then e.g. if for 500 days the newsgroup got 10 billions headers you can set also last headers e.g. to 100 millions it will override the retention setting since for 10 billions probably there will be not enough memory.
you can invoke "apply retention" even when the newsgroup is open from the newsgroup workspace context menu (e.g. if headers are not set to be purged automatically).
as to the load mode, if set to "Load" when you start the program it will load newsgroup headers (but won't open the newsgroup). "Unload" means when you close the newsgroup it will unload it right away, "Persist" when you open the newsgroup it will be loaded, when you close the newsgroup window it won't unload unless you close the program or invoke the 'Unload' option from workspace newsgroup context menu explicitly.
When newsgroup is loaded the headers will be shown in edit menu->global view too in addition to headers in opened newsgroups (which are always loaded too of course).
I'll the rewrite the reply later in a simpler way, since right now I'm too busy with the next release.
