Are you using highwinds (usenetserver etc.)? - I had a complaint from another user recently regarding UNS, I'll change the topic subject if you do.

Try to uncheck edit menu->properties->general, newsgroups, retention, quick.

If you download very large groups - better define "headers per server" in edit menu->properties->newsgroups.

Ngroups changed their provider to readnews, no problem there, astraweb also ok.

Headers were highwinds weak spot in the distant past, maybe they have introduced some problem again, currently (after ngroups changed their source) I don't have an account to test what it is exactly, but it appears the server times out on arbitrary (but completely legitimate) header requests issued by the quick retention code.

Thanks a lot Alex!
I unchecked retention, quick and it is working like a charm now.
I never had to do that before and your help was great!

Try to contact them about this, I remember they had a problem with xover command for large groups (too slow) which later was resolved.
